Building a Writing Desk Class
Tools, materials and information
Preparations and Wood
The writing desk that I have in mind is approximately 30" tall, 24" deep and 42" long, with some potential for variation in dimensions. The aprons are about 4" high and the two drawers about 3" tall. The legs are tapered from 2" thick stock. (See web site for examples.) Including waste, the desk requires about 35 board feet of 4/4 material and about six board feet of 8/4 for the four legs. I encourage you bring wood if you like but I also have the usual domestic woods on hand for sale. The school prices are competitive with hardwood dealers. Please let us know in advance.
Make your own drawing of the Writing Desk, no matter how rough! There is no need to worry about the construction details; we will work these out in class. From your drawing, make up a parts list with names and approximate dimensions.
Tool List
A mallet for striking chisels
Dovetail saw - either Japanese or Western style. I have come to prefer the Western and like the Lie-Nielsen, Adria and Wenzloff & Sons brands. The Japanese Dozuki “Z” saw #12F27 (Woodcraft) is a good choice and only about $40.
Cutting gauge…cuts across the grain (A “wheel” disc) marking gauge works best – the good ones are made by Veritas and Tite-Mark.
Dovetail marking gauge or sliding bevel. A pair (1:6, 1:8) Veritas Dovetail Saddle Markers are the best bet in my opinion.
Measuring: A 6” 4R ruler , tape measure.
Squares: small engineers square or even better a 4” double square (Starrett is best). A combination square (6” or 12”) is also a good to have. There is no need for the 6” combo if you have the 4” double square.
Dead blow hammer (14 to 20 oz.) – No rubber mallet
Sharp bevel edge chisel set
A notebook and a digital camera if you have one for journaling
Safety equipment: safety glasses, dust mask, hearing protection
I will have extra tools on hand to try or use if you need them.
We do extend a 15% discount on Lie-Nielsen tools to students. Please call or e-mail for information
A full catered lunch is served every day and drinks and snacks are provided all day. Please let us know of any special dietary needs.
Call or email me with any questions on tools, materials or design and check the web site for any updates.
