Tools & Materials List - Cabinet Maker’s Workbench

In this class we’re going to be building Christopher Schwarz's adaptation of Charles Holtzapffel’s workbench for cabinetmakers that can be knocked down easily to move and can be tightened up if things become loose over time. The goal of the class is for you to drive away with a completed bench that will last several lifetimes.

We will be building the bench according to Chris's plans except that this one will be a knock down version. This link has an updated drawing by Chris at this location...

Knockdown plans from Christopher Schwarz

We will be using top grade 8/4 Hard Maple for all of the bench including the vises and vise chops. We will premill the lumber for each top, base and vises.

We will build the face vise using two 2" wooden screws and nuts from Big Wood Vises. The tail vise will be the small quick release vise from Lee Valley. All of the bench hardware will be supplied by the school.

The size of the bench will be as in the drawing, 24" wide and 6' long. The height of each bench will be individualizded to match the height and the type of work of the student.

Tool List – I have all the machinery we need and all of the hand-held power tools and accessories. Below are some of the personal tools you can bring along to help in the process:

1. Your familiar layout tools: Marking gauge, combination square, marking knife, 6” rule, dial calipers, dividers etc.

2. Planes for trimming, fitting and finishing: a jointer plane, smoothing plane, block plane, router plane and large shoulder plane would be an excellent set.

3. Boring tools: If you have a 12” brace and a set of auger bits, please bring them.

4. Saws: A tenon saw, carcass saw and a flush triming would be useful.

5. Chisels: Your bench chisels and a mortising chisel would be helpful. Bring a mallet!

6. Bar clamps. We have lots but you never have enough....if you can bring some in the 24" range that will help. Do mark them with your name.

7. Saw horses. If you have a pair of horses please bring them also.

8. Personal safety gear – hearing protectors, safety glasses and a dust mask.

9. Plus any tools that you typically work with in your shop.
