Choosing and Using Hand Tools with Andy Rae
Tools & Materials List
Students are encouraged to bring the items listed below to class. However, please don’t fret if you don’t have all of the tools on the list; simply bring what you can. There will be plenty of tools on hand for the class.
Tools
· Ordinary “yellow” pencil, or mechanical pencil
· Tape measure
· 6 or 12 in. ruler
· Hammer (16 oz. claw hammer, or equivalent)
· 3 in., 6 in. and12 in. squares (a small, 3-in. machinists’ square and a 6- or 12-in. combination square are great)
· Bevel gauge
· Marking gauge (with knife-style tip; not a round, pointed tip)
· Pointed marking knife (an Exacto craft knife is ideal)
· Your favorite hand planes, such as a block plane and a No. 4 bench plane
· Hand scraper (also called a card scraper)
· Your favorite handsaws, such as a dovetail saw or other type of fine-cutting backsaw (I recommend Lie-Nielsen saws, or any quality Japanese dovetail saw) and a flush-cutting saw
· Set of bench chisels (1/4, 3/8, 1/2 and 3/4 in.) with an appropriate striking mallet or hammer
· Burnisher (I like the Veritas brand from Lee Valley)
· Your favorite sharpening stones (I will also have mine on hand for you to try)
· Any tool you can’t do without, and that customarily lives and breathes by your side when you’re in your own shop at home
· I encourage you to bring along a copy of my book, Choosing & Using Hand Tools (2002, Lark Books), as we’ll use it for reference in class. I’ll be delighted to autograph it for you, and I’ll have copies on hand for those that wish to purchase one.
· Notebook for taking notes, pencil/pen and digital camera for photos (if you have one)
Safety Gear
· Personal eye protection (safety glasses)
· Personal hearing protection (ear plugs or head muffs)
· Dust mask
A full catered lunch is served every day and drinks and snacks are provided all day. Please let us know of any special dietary needs.
