PREPARATIONS &
WOOD
In this class you will be carving a design on a picture frame. In order to use
the class time to the fullest, I would suggest that you come with your frame
already assembled. I will provide 2 designs from which you can choose. These
designs will fit a frame measuring 8Ó x 10Ó. (Rabbet should be 3/8 x 3/8.) If
you would like to make a different size frame and you would like me to provide
the design, please contact me 2 weeks before class so I have time to complete
the design. You are also welcome to come up with your own design.
WOOD
We will supply practice wood and a wooden frame ready for you to carve for just the cost of the materials.
TOOL LIST
There are a great many
sizes and shapes of carving tools. My suggestion would be to get several tools
off the list below. At a bare minimum you will need 1 ÒVÓ gouge, 3 to 4 ÒUÓ
gouges and 1 ÒFlatÓ gouge. Personally, I would avoid getting sets. It is more
expensive to purchase tools one at a time, but you will use all of the tools
you purchase. If you are purchasing new tools, bare in mind that you typically
get what you pay for. The tools ability to hold an edge is important to your
safety as well as your enjoyment. If you have any questions regarding the brand
of knife you are considering, please call me and I will be happy to give you my
opinion as to the quality of the tool.

Other
Tools
á
Any
other shape tools other than those on the above list. The sizes should be in
the range of 5 to 20mm.

For
some shaping and for finishing you will want rasps and files. I also like to
use scrapers or shave hooks. Here, carvers sets are well worth the investment.
A set of 8 rasps of different shapes as well as a set of 8 files will be a
great start to your tool collection.
á
A
mallet is another tool that I like to use. Some people like them, others never
use them. I will have some at the school to try if you are not sure you will
use one.
á
Carving
Glove
I will have other shape
and size tools on hand for you to use or try.
Don't hesitate to call or
email me with any questions on materials, tools or design
