Frequently Asked Questions List

Where is the Kelly Mehler School of Woodworking located?

The physical address is 1865 Big Hill Road,  the School is located on the same property as Kelly’s house. Because of the nature of our business, we do not have “open hours.” Visits can be arranged by appointment. If you are in the area, give us a call and we’ll give you directions. We would love to have you visit! (859) 986-5540

I want to know more about the School’s physical set-up. Is there air-conditioning? What about food?

The KMSW is a two-story building with big power tools and machinery on the ground floor and handtools and workbenches on the second floor. We have a lending library stocked with woodworking books, free Wi-Fi, central heat and air-conditioning.

The shop is naturally well lit thanks to big, south-facing windows and of course there are lights for cloudy days and evening work. We serve a chef catered lunch daily as well as fruit, snacks and drinks (filtered water, soft drinks, and bring your own) throughout the day. Lunch is served on real plates with real silverware. When the weather is nice there is room to eat outside on the deck or down at the picnic table.

The class I want to take is full. Can I put my name on a waiting list?

Yes! If a class is full, there is no charge to put your name on a waiting list. Just click on the Comment / Waitlist link and fill in the form with the class(s) you are interested in. We will contact you if an opening becomes available.

Once you register, our regular fees and cancellation policy go into effect.

I heard I could get a good deal on Lie-Nielsen Tools through KMSW. How does that work?

Lie-Nielsen Toolworks currently offers a 10% discount to students of the KMSW. Contact Lie-Nielsen at 1-800-327-2520 or go to their website www.lie-nielsen.com for more information.

What airports are closest to Berea?

The Bluegrass Airport (LEX) in Lexington KY is the airport closest to Berea. It is about 45 miles away and the drive takes between 45 minutes and an hour depending on traffic.  Other airports in the region include those in Louisville, KY; Cincinnati, OH; and Knoxville, TN.

Do I need to rent a car to get from the airport to Berea?  What are my transportation options once I get to Berea?

Unfortunately there is no good public transportation available between Lexington and Berea.  If you are flying in, we recommend renting a car.  Although there is taxi service available between Lexington and Berea, it is probably more economical to rent a car through an online discount site.  If you do choose to travel by taxi to Berea, often students are able to carpool between their hotel and the school.  Let us know if you have more questions.

What hotel/motel is closest to Kelly Mehler’s School Of Woodworking?

All the hotels in Berea are within 5 miles of the school.  Those in Richmond, KY are usually within 15 miles of the school.
